One day, I was mindlessly scrolling through Twitter when I saw a tweet that stopped me in my tracks:
“God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.”
It is a simple, yet easily forgotten concept; and a beautiful reminder. God’s love for us is not based on our good deeds, or lack thereof. His love for us is solely based on His amazing character. So many scriptures tell us that not only does God have immense love for us, but He is the very definition of love.
Here are five examples of how God demonstrates His love for us.
God's love for us is unfailing. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
We can have all the riches, knowledge and power in the world, but if we don’t have love, we have nothing. That is the power of love, and God’s love for us will never fail.
God's love for us is unconditional. Ephesians 2:8-9 – For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.
There is nothing we can do to make God love us more or less. We can’t earn His love by doing good deeds; His love for us was given before we were even born.
God's love for us is self-sacrificing. 1 John 4:9-10 – This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
This sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross was not only reserved for those who return His love, but also for those who reject, mock and even hate Him. He paid the ultimate sacrifice so that every single one of us may have eternal life through Christ.
God's love for us is inseparable. Romans 5:38-39 – For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
If we are feeling doubtful or insecure about our place and purpose in this world, God reminds us that there is absolutely nothing that will separate us from His love.
God's love for us is welcoming. Psalm 66:20 – Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld His love from me!
At some point, we may be guilty of turning from God, pushing Him to the side or even denying Him. Yet, He neither rejects us nor withholds His love from us. Instead, He welcomes us with open arms.
